Boston Krav Maga Instructor - Gershon Ben Keren
The Head Instructor at Krav Maga Yashir Boston is Gershon Ben Keren (Gershon is hist first name, and Ben Keren), his last. He has been practicing Krav Maga since 1993. He initially passed and completed the IKMF’s
(International Krav Maga Federation) 29-day, Instructor Program, ran by Eyal Yanilov, and Amnon Darsa. His time with the IKMF also saw him train with Avi Moyal and Gabi Noah; he has also trained in Israel with
Haim Gidon, and has brought over to teach in Boston, MA, another one of Imi Lichtenfeld’s original black belts, Miki Assulin; who wrote the foreword for his second book on Krav Maga. Gershon also holds a third-degree
black belt in Dennis Hisardut (Dennis Survival) and was certified as an instructor in Hisardut by Dennis Hanover. Hisardut is an Israeli system of fighting which is taught to certain elite units and special forces
within the IDF (Israeli Defense Force).
Gershon Ben Keren, started working in the security industry since 1990, first as a doorman, working security for pubs, bars and nightclubs in the North-East of England. Door work in the UK requires those who work
security to be able to handle physically violent incidents, whether that means breaking up fights, physically removing unruly customers, or defending yourself when attacked; all very common incidents in a busy city
on a Friday and Saturday night. He later went on to supervise, manage and train individuals and teams working in this industry. When you are having to work in a crowded, noisy and dimly lit nightclub to remove
somebody from it (who doesn’t want to leave and is resisting), possibly somebody who is part of an angry group that is wanting to prevent you from doing so, what works and doesn’t work, soon becomes apparent.
Being able to handle and manage a violent incident requires the appropriate tactics, techniques and practical skills, along with the appropriate mindset in order to be successful. Fortunately, these are all things
which can be taught and learnt, from those with the right experiences and understanding. It is one thing to “know” Krav Maga, it is another thing to be able to apply it successfully.
Gershon, currently works in the security industry as a criminologist offering training and consultancy to individuals, organizations and businesses in Boston and New England, in how to prevent becoming the
victims of violent crime. This can involve running programs and workshops on the types of workplace violence that certain organizations may potentially face, consultancy services around safe hiring and firing
policies, along with active shooter training etc. As part of the research for his third book he did an in-depth study into over 140 active shooter incidents, looking at the commonalities and difference between
them. He conducts similar research around common assaults, street robberies and abductions, to make sure that the physical Krav Maga program he teaches, is truly reality based e.g., how do street robberies
actually happen, what are the components of them etc.
It is this unique combination of a research-based approach to violence, along with his first-hand experiences of violence that makes the Krav Maga program he teaches so practical effective.
