About Krav Maga Yashir Boston

Krav Maga meaning “Contact Combat” in Hebrew is a system of close-combat/fighting taught to members of the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces). It has also been adapted for law-enforcement, corrections officers, and civilians etc. with each adaptation designed to deal with the different contexts in which violence is experienced e.g., corrections officers and law-enforcement need to engage with those who act violently, whilst in many civilian settings/scenarios disengagement is an option etc. However, what all of these adaptations share is a common set of fighting concepts and heuristics e.g., they all use instinctive movements and have simple, straightforward techniques and solutions which can be applied when exhausted (once the effects of adrenaline wear off the body goes into a recovery state making physical activity difficult) and emotionally stressed; both of these things happen to the most experienced individuals i.e., nobody who is assaulted maintains a calm Zen-like state, in fact to survive a violent altercation it is necessary to adopt an aggressive, survival mindset.

Whilst Krav Maga techniques are straightforward and uncomplicated it is necessary to develop the fighting skills in order to apply them e.g., if you are unable to manage and control range you will not be able to block effectively, especially when dealing with edged-weapon attacks, such as knives and broken bottles etc. A large part of the training at Krav Maga Yashir Boston is developing these fighting skills. Unfortunately, within the Krav Maga community, outside of Israel, aggression is seen as a substitute, rather than a compliment for skills, and there is a lack of emphasis on the importance of developing these. Also, whilst fitness is important, especially when experiencing the fatigue of a post adrenalized state, it too isn’t a substitute for having fighting skills, such as power generation in punching and striking etc. If you don’t know how to and/or train to hit hard, your aggressor will soon realize that you are lacking in fire-power, and not be hesitant in pressing home their attack(s).

At Krav Maga Yashir Boston our goal is to turn you into a person who is able to deal with and survive a violent altercation whether this is against a single assailant or multiple assailants, whether they are unarmed or armed etc. Our aim is not to teach you how to “win” a fight but how to successfully survive one, by engaging with an aggressor(s), in order to create a safe opportunity to disengage and get to safety. In all likelihood this will be accomplished by the aggressive application of Krav Maga techniques, however this is done in order for you to create an opportunity to get away safely. There are three assumptions that effective Krav Maga makes when dealing with violence: 1) an attacker is armed even if a weapon isn’t visible, 2) they are assisted e.g., there are people in the environment who can come to aid them, and 3) they are able i.e., they know how to fight. When you consider the potential odds that you are facing disengaging at the safest/earliest opportunity is a strategy that makes sense.
